Pictured: Not the drive I just picked up

So I do my research before coming here, but nonetheless when I have issues with tech, my car or other things, I like going here because I like actually talking to people with some experience, which this place has proven to have. Anyway, I got the replacement drive for my laptop and it’ll be here soon. Yay. Now I need to get Windows. Boo. My laptop didn’t come with a disk to re-install Windows or anything, nor any codes. On my searching around I found that you can purchase Windows 10, the OS my Laptop came with, for about $100-$300 bucks. Yeahno. On eBay and other places they’re selling Windows 10 “keys” for like $10. From what I’ve gathered these keys are like a subscription key for when you buy an antivirus program or other software. Thing is, how would you even install Windows with a key on something without an OS in the first place? And if any of you have experience with keys for WIndows, will it be a one-and-done deal or am I gonna have to keep throwing cash at this just to keep my Laptop’s OS?

The keys that you see being sold are activation keys. They “legitimize” a copy of windows that’s been installed. You put the code in once, and never pay again. I’d be careful with those discount sites, many times the keys they sell are stolen.

Now, you don’t necessarily need a key, as long as you don’t mind a silk screen monogram in the lower right corner of the desktop. You can grab the OS of your choice in a download here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

Now, you need to take the iso from that download and make a boot usb drive. You can google the procedure, it’s not difficult, you just need a computer and free boot drive software.

After you’ve made it, you need to go in your laptops BIOS (usually by hitting delete or a set of keys on pc start up) and set the usb drive as the first boot option, then restart the laptop. It should now take you to windows installation. Just skip the part about activating it you don’t end up buying a key.

PS: I assume you’ve already replaced the HDD in your laptop, but if not, I can walk you through that.

If you cloned your old HDD onto the SSD you’ll be able to just replace it and boot. The current HDD still works right?

If so, Just copy everything onto an external drive, then delete stuff of the HDD until it’s all small enough to fit on the SSD (assuming the SSD won’t hold everything currently on the HDD, which it probably can’t) then clone the HDD onto the SSD. With the cloning software if there’s a checkbox for “optimize for SSD” make sure you click it.

I used AOMEI when I installed my SSD and it worked fine and had the option for optimizing SSDs. (Idk how much that actually helps, but why not)

Sorry, I’m not one of the tech people for this issue, so I have a question:

I thought windows 10 was “bonded” to the computer, and not the drive so that you wouldn’t need to worry about such a thing anymore if you bought your computer with windows 10 on it originally. Is this not the case?

Assuming you set up Windows with your Microsoft account, you shouldn’t need a key. Just download the installer from MS, install it, and set it up, and Windows should know you’ve already licensed it on the machine. That’s how it worked for me anyway.

Ah, right. Is that gonna be there on everything or just the desktop? Like I’m not gonna have that in the corner while i’m screwing around on Youtube?

Simple as shit.

+8GB USB + W10 + Rufus = your laptop has the Windows COA stored in BIOS and will automatically register. No buying anything if you have a USB drive.

Just make sure to select UEFI in “Target system” if your laptop uses it. A simple search for the model should tell you this, it probably is.

Or use the “USB installation media” software from Microsoft. Even easier.

If your computer came with Windows, it should have an OEM sticker with the key that was used if it isn’t stored in the computer. Use one of the ISOs and install with that key or just install.

Did the old drive die, or is it still with us?

Nope no stickers for win8 or win10. The key is hardcoded in the UEFI bios
